St. Louis has unfortunately gained a reputation for being a “dangerous” city, but this doesn’t have to become your experience. Like any urban area, St. Louis has neighborhoods that have higher crime rates than others, but it’s important to note that the majority of the city’s attractions and neighborhoods are safe for visitors. And why St. Louis attracts over 25 million visitors each year.

Neighborhoods like The Hill, Soulard, and Lafayette Park, (just to name a few) not only perfectly embody St. Louis’ rich history — with historic mansions and row houses dating back to the 19th century — but also offer a great base for exploring.
As someone who has had the pleasure of visiting St. Louis many times, thanks to my husband’s ties to the area, I can assure you that the recommendations provided in this guide are based on my firsthand experiences and insights. 5. The Hill
The Hill is known as St. Louis’ Little Italy. In the late 1800’s, Italians immigrated to St. Louis to pursue the “American Dream” and created one of the largest Italian American neighborhoods in the U.S.
This small walkable neighborhood is one of the most charming in St. Louis! I absolutely love coming here — not only for the incredible food but the atmosphere. Everything down to the fire hydrants is painted in green, white, and red to showcase the deep pride locals have for their community.
If you’re a fan of Italian cuisine, you’re in for a treat. There are so many family-owned delis, pizzerias, and upscale Italian eateries just steps away. One of my favorite spots is Anthonino’s Taverna, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Forest Park also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, like Shakespeare in the Park, providing entertainment for all ages.

7. Downtown St. Louis
Hear me out! When you hear “Downtown St. Louis,” it’s natural to have concerns about safety and crime, but I’ve stayed in this area several times and thoroughly enjoyed my time here. With increased security measures, the city is actively working to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
However, still keep your wits about you. To be safe, I’d suggest just using Uber or Lyft if you are traveling around downtown at night.
If you’re renting a car, be sure to remove anything of value before parking it. Unfortunately, car theft is a common issue. You can also park at a Preferred Downtown Parking Facility that provides a higher level of security.
For first-time visitors, staying in downtown St. Louis puts you close to all the action. You are within walking distance of the Gateway Arch, cultural landmarks like the St. Louis Union Station and City Museum, and Busch Stadium for a baseball game.

8. Soulard
If you’re looking for a safe place to stay in St. Louis with a vibrant cultural scene, look no further than Soulard. Soulard is another walkable neighborhood filled with historic row houses, local restaurants and bars, and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.
Many of the homes in Souldard date back to the mid-to-late 19th century. But don’t let this fool you! Despite being one of the oldest communities in the city, Soulard is known for its lively atmosphere that comes alive at night. You’ll often see people cruising around in golf carts, adding a friendly small-town vibe to the bustling streets.
As an added treat, you’ll find yourself close to some of the BEST eateries in St. Louis. I strongly suggest adding Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co., Blue City Deli, and Sidney Street Cafe to your must-visit list.
Don’t forget about Molly’s In Soulard and Venice Café (cash-only bar) for a nightcap — these are some of the BEST spots in the city to grab a drink.
Soulard is also home to the Soulard Farmers Market, which is the oldest farmers market west of the Mississippi. With its welcoming atmosphere, Soulard is a neighborhood that truly captures the essence of St. Louis.
