Best Restaurants in Murren, Switzerland

1. Hotel Eiger Mürren Restaurant

It’s so good we went here twice! Hotel Eiger Mürren Restaurant is located inside the Hotel Eiger on the far north side of the village, right across from the BLM train station.

The restaurant offers various dining areas, such as an outdoor sun terrace overlooking the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, as well as a snug indoor restaurant with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows framing the scenic view.

The menu is quite expansive so it should be sure to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Though, I will say, it’s also probably one of the most expensive too. But the quality of food matches the price tag — a.k.a. it’s delicious! Hotel Eiger Mürren Restaurant makes for a great date night spot or place to celebrate a special occasion.

The restaurant is also open for lunch from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm if you want to pop in to enjoy some fondue or other “snacks” such as burgers and sandwiches.

    2. Stägerstübli

Stägerstübli is the perfect spot in the small village of Mürren to experience local Swiss food. Here you can find traditional dishes such as fondue, raclette, spätzle, veal stew in a cream sauce (my personal favorite), and even horse steak.

Yes, the Swiss love their horse meat. So, if you want to try this unique local dish, Stägerstübli is the spot to do so. Hint: The flavor is mildly sweet, slightly gamey, and tastes like a blend of beef and venison.

The restaurant has both an indoor dining room and an outdoor patio for guests to enjoy. Please call +41 (0)33 855 13 16 to make a reservation.

Note: Stägerstübli is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

⚠️ As you will see from some of the reviews online, there are complaints about the staff being rude to tourists. Yes, unfortunately, this was my experience as well — and actually the only place in the entire country where I experienced anything similar.

To make sure you don’t have the same experience, I suggest offering a courteous “hello” in Swiss German [Grüezi] as a gesture of cultural respect. Even though the staff is proficient in English, I’ve found that they appreciate being greeted in Swiss German. You can then apologize for your limited knowledge and proceed from there.

    3. Tham Restaurant

This restaurant is an unexpected gem in this small Swiss alpine village with a year-round population of only 450. If you are looking for a break from traditional Swiss cuisine, it’s a great option.

Tham Chinese Restaurant is owned by five-star chef, Mr. Tham Kok Keong, and his wife who have been running the restaurant in Mürren since 1997. The couple is so warm and welcoming and among one of the friendliest you will meet on your trip!

The exterior is unassuming, but don’t let that fool you — here you can enjoy delicious and generous portions of Asian cuisine including black pepper beef, sweet & sour chicken, and much more. Some guests even stated it was the “best Chinese food they’ve ever had”!

Note: Tham Restaurant accepts cash only including Swiss Francs, Euros, or US Dollars.

    4. The Eiger Guesthouse

This cozy and casual spot inside Eiger Guesthouse is located right across from the rail station on the northern side of Mürren. The restaurant serves Swiss specialties, delicious pizzas along with other Italian dishes. The restaurant is open all year round.

It’s recognized for being among the more budget-friendly dining establishments in Mürren — a refreshing shift, especially considering the typical prices in Switzerland.

The Eiger Guesthouse also includes a bar and pub, serving as one of the primary choices for a late-night option in the village if you’re seeking a little nightcap.

Best Murren Restaurants with a View

While many places in Mürren offer views of the three Bernese Mountains, a select few offer both front-row, unobstructed mountain views and exceptional cuisine.

    5. Drei Berge Restaurant

Drei Berge Restaurant in Mürren, Switzerland

Drei Berge Restaurant is located in the adjoining 3-star boutique hotel and offers menu items with Swiss, Japanese, Italian, and Asian inspirations as well as wild game that is often hunted by the owners themselves.

My husband and I had the opportunity to taste chamois (goat-antelope) that the owner personally hunted after we had just spotted these very animals below the tennis courts in town right before our meal. Talk about a “farm-to-table” experience!

Update: Recently acquired and revitalized, this hotel has a new appearance as of June 1, 2023. If you’ve been here previously, the former establishment was known as Hotel Bellevue and featured the Jägerstübli restaurant.

You can make a reservation to secure a prime spot on the outdoor patio for incredible views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. Or if you’d rather sit inside, there are also plenty of tables available. Click here to make a reservation.

    6. Hotel Pension Gimmelwald

Hotel Pension Gimmelwald - a Rick Steve's favorite

So technically this restaurant isn’t situated within Mürren itself; rather, it’s located in the quaint village below called Gimmelwald, and it’s an absolute must-visit.

To get to Gimmelwald, you have the option to either enjoy a scenic hike down, which typically takes about an hour if you stop for photos, or opt for a 5-minute cable car ride from Mürren. Be sure to check the timetable for your trip back to Mürren as journeys transition from every 30 minutes to every 60 minutes after 19:55 (7:55 pm).

A Rick Steves favorite, the restaurant offers a charming ambiance that became one of the standout highlights of our entire trip. If you are not staying at the adjacent hotel, it’s advised to call ahead at +41 (0)33 855 17 30 to make a reservation.

The menu features dishes crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients, all skillfully prepared in-house. You won’t find a menu online per se as it changes daily — so call ahead if you have flexibility in your plans. This way, you can inquire about what’s on the evening’s menu to make sure it ensure it aligns with your preferences.

I almost forgot…Don’t forget to try the local beer Schwarz Mönch! It’s one of the highest-rated Schwarzbier in the world and a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

    7. Piz Gloria

Piz Gloria restaurant located at the summit of the Schilthorn in Murren, Switzerland

This spot requires a bit of a commute to get to ha! You’ll have to travel ~30 minutes by aerial cableway until you reach the summit of the Schilthorn. Piz Gloria is a 360-degree revolving restaurant at the top located 9744 ft (2970 meters) above sea level.

It’s also where the iconic Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was filmed.

To secure your spot at the James Bond Brunch, available daily until 2 p.m., or for any other mealtime at the restaurant, advance reservations are required.

The all-you-can-eat James Bond Brunch is CHF 37.00 for adults and CHF 22.00 for Children (6 – 15 years), as of October 2023.

To reach the 360°-Restaurant Piz Gloria in Schilthorn, you’ll head to the cableway station located on the far south side of Mürren. Tickets for the cable car from Mürren to Schilthorn range from CHF 42.80 to CHF 85.60. *separate cost from the brunch*

The Swiss Half Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, Berner Oberland Pass, and GA travelcard all reduce the overall cost for the aerial cableway by 50%.

Traveler’s Tip: Buy a combo ticket for both the ‘James Bond brunch’ or ‘afternoon platter’ AND the cable car to Schilthorn as this will actually save you some money. They usually ask you at the ticket counter, but if not, be sure to bring it up.

The ticket covers all the James Bond attractions at the summit, so make sure to save some time to explore Spy World, Cinema, and the Walk of Fame.

All in all, it’s not a cheap meal by any means, but it’s an experience you will remember!

Let’s face it, sometimes you need a light and healthy alternative to the usual Swiss dishes loaded with cheese and chocolate. There are two spots in Mürren that fit the bill.

    8. Café LIV

Café LIV is the cutest little spot centrally located in the quiet village of Mürren. The cafe serves baked goods (try the fruitcake!), sandwiches, soups, and delicious coffee drinks. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available.

The friendly staff makes you feel like a guest in their home. I was even craving a smoothie one day (not listed on their menu) and they made me one!

Tip: It’s also an excellent place to grab sandwiches for a hiking adventure.

You can choose between cozy indoor seating or the outdoor patio on pleasant days. Outside, there’s a life-size chess board, making it an ideal spot for the kids while you relax with your latte and enjoy the incredible view. It’s a win-win!

If it’s a nice day outside, choose a seat on their patio and you might even catch a glimpse of people paragliding off the mountainside just in front of the bistro.

Coop is one of the largest and most well-known supermarket chains in Switzerland. The grocery store offers a wide range of products, including fresh produce, pre-made sandwiches, salads, pizza, dairy, meat, bakery items, and chocolate.

My husband and I regularly visited Coop for lunch, so we could then splurge on dinners at the quaint restaurants in Mürren. Which restaurant has the best fondue in Mürren?

That’s a tough one. I would probably give the award to Stägerstübli. However, Hotel Eiger Restaurant is a close second — plus they have more varieties of fondue. For example, there is an Eiger cheese fondue with truffle that is calling my name for my next visit.
